SA's 'Godfather of Punk' George Bacon dies

The South African music scene lost a punk legend this weekend with the death of Hog Hoggidy Hog frontman George Bacon. Shocked fans and friends have begun paying their respects to Bacon‚ who recently became a father‚ on his Facebook page‚ saying that he would be sorely missed.Ryk Otto said on Facebook that Bacon was more than just a frontman of a punk band.“You were an integral part of something that changed and shaped so many lives. There is no greater gift than that‚” he said.Fans have also posted their favourite memories of their times with Bacon on his wall.The band posted the following message: “It’s with great sadness that we send this message. We have lost our brother and his memory will live on in our minds and hearts forever”.Hog Hoggidy Hog‚ who has over 18,000 Facebook followers‚ played at Cape Town’s The Assembly on Friday night alongside punkers Fuzigish and electronic rap act P.H Fat.The 20-year-old band has been a stalwart of the Punk genre in South Africa They toured overseas sharing the stage with bands like Nofx‚ Bad Religion and Total Chaos.Details of Bacon’s death have not been confirmed.
