'Dragon Quest X' takes Nintendo series online
Dragon Quest's tenth core outing will introduce online play for those connecting via both Nintendo Wii and its successor, the Wii U.
Along with Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest is one of Japan's best known series of role-playing adventures.
Both are developed by Square Enix, whose 2002 venture into Massively Multiplayer Online games, Final Fantasy XI, was considered a success, but follow-up Final Fantasy XIV floundered.
The first screenshot for Dragon Quest X emerged from a September 5 press conference, and shows multiple players together in an online environment.
It was also revealed that the bulk of play will occur online, save for the first few hours of introduction.
Japanese studio Level 5 handled the most recent entries into the series, most notably its PlayStation outing, Dragon Quest VIII, and Nintendo DS best-seller Dragon Quest IX.
They're now just as well known for the Professor Layton series and are busy with lengthy spin-off Fantasy Life.
