Grammy award-winning choral group Ladysmith Black Mambazo have their eye on Hollywood producer and actor Tyler Perry to oversee a feature film on their musical journey to international stardom.

The group's publicist, Andile Mqwebu, said yesterday that Perry, who produced Why Did I Get Married and The Diary of a Man Black Woman, has been approached to get involved in the film.

"We are busy with talks to bring Tyler Perry on board. Though we do not have a concrete deal yet, it looks promising, and the people we are speaking through are as excited as we are about the project," Mqwebu said.

The feature film, which is expected to be filmed in South Africa and abroad, will tell the story of the lives and musical journey of each member of the acclaimed group.

Mqwebu revealed that Vusi Kunene, who played Jack Mabaso in the popular soapie drama Generations, was on the list to take up the role of the lead singer and founder of the group, Joseph Shabalala.

Mqwebu said the group had applied for funding from the National Lottery and various foreign organisations to finance the project. The Mambazo Foundation has also raised funds, she said.
