As the film version of the 1980s glam rock scene, ‘Rock of Ages’, gets set to hit theatres in June, the casting of the film ‘CBGB’, about the 1970s iconic New York punk rock club, is putting actors and musicians into roles of real legendary rock stars.

The rock 'n' roll movie CBGB has added several cast members, including Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, who will play rock icon Iggy Pop (Lust for Life).

The story centres on the seminal lower Manhattan music venue where acts like the Talking Heads and The Ramones got their start.

Originally a venue for country, bluegrass and blues music, the tiny club featured local bands who played original music.

Alan Rickman (Harry Potter) will play the club's owner Hilly Kristal. Other actors include Rupert Grint of Harry Potter and The Big Bang Theory's Johnny Galecki.

Malin Ackerman (Watchmen, Rock of Ages) will play Debbie Harry of Blondie and Mickey Sumner (The Borgias) will portray Patti Smith, among a host of other acts from the era.

The club closed in 2008. Kristal's daughter, Lisa Kristal Burgman, in charge of her father's estate, will co-produce the film.

CGBG is directed by Randall Miller (Bottle Shock), who will also helm The Drummer, about Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys.

Production is scheduled to begin June 25 in Savannah, Georgia, and New York City.
