Tom Hardy (who plays Bane). Hardy gained lots of muscle to play the formidable Bane, described as "a terrorist in both thought and action". Could Bane be the villain who brings down Batman?

Gary Oldman (Commissioner Gordon) is the good cop who's been working hard to rid Gotham City of its dirty scumbags since Bruce Wayne was a kid. He's still at it and despite the obstacles that stand in his way, obviously still believes his beloved city can be saved. The trailer suggests Gordon is up for the fight of his life.

Anne Hathaway(Selina Kyle/ Catwoman). She has big shoes to fill because Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman (1992) was great. Then again, Hathaway couldn't possibly do a worse job than Halle Berry's Catwoman (2004).

Morgan Freeman reprises his role as Lucius Fox, the brilliant engineer behind Batman's weaponry. Without Fox, there wouldn't be a Batman: no Batsuit that makes him (not quite) bulletproof and airborne, no cool weapons and definitely no Batmobile.

Marion Cotillard plays Miranda Tate, the woman who brings Bruce Wayne some hope following the tragic events that unfolded in The Dark Knight. There has been speculation that Tate is also Talia al Ghul, the daughter of Ra's al Ghul (Liam Neeson), who Batman killed in the first film.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who plays John Blake). He is the young cop who Commissioner Gordon takes under his wing. Critics have speculated that Blake could become Batman's sidekick. Robin without the silly outfit, then.
Fans of Christopher Nolan's Batman have been frothing at the mouth in anticipation of The Dark Knight Rises' release. While we wait to see the final installment of the trilogy, we also wonder if it can outperform the year's biggest box office hit, Avengers. Here's a lowdown of some characters as they appeared on the red carpet for the film's New York premiere.
