One country, one federation is one of Cosatu's main rallying points, with emphasis on the centrality of unity among its affiliates.

To unite workers across all sectors of the economy, Cosatu grouped unions into industries. Its sixth national congress resolved to merge unions into cartels or broad sectors such as public sector and manufacturing.

While the federation remains committed to unity with all unions, it is common cause that, for as long as there is no single federation in the country, Cosatu has no choice but to recruit even those workers who belong to rival unions and federations.

It is unacceptable that some in Cosatu have blamed NUM leadership for problems.

I'm distraught by signs that Zwelinzima Vavi is fast becoming a spent force.

A partisan leader is not good enough to lead Cosatu to the many battles that lie ahead.
