The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal would like to extend good wishes to all pupils who have today, the 22 October 2009, commenced with their matric examinations.

We strongly believe that the examination is crucial as it does not only mark the culmination of twelve years of schooling but also determines access to tertiary education and employment.

“On behalf of the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal, I would like extended good wishes to all Grade 12 learners. We have no doubt that  the number of learners passing at bachelor pass level will continue to increase so that we have more young people who will enter universities next year,” said ANC provincial secretary, Sihle Zikalala.

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal is happy that through the steward leadership of President Jacob Zuma, we have seen a steady increase in the number of learners passing at bachelor pass level, increasing between 2009 and 2011, from around 109 697 to 120 767. Comrade Zuma’s passion for education is quickly bearing fruits.

Soon after becoming the president, Cde Zuma convened a national imbizo for school principals who shared with him their experiences and that has helped to improve the level of schooling in South Africa.

We are confident that the program-of-action aimed at improving the quality of education, launched by KwaZulu-Natal MEC Cde Senzo Mchunu, will improve this year’s matric rate. We also believe that the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union’s matric intervention program will help to improve the pass rate.

“We commend members of the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union who took part in matric intervention programmes this year. Their programme included winter schools and teaching during weekends," said Zikalala.
