Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Jeff Radebe has invited suitable candidates to apply for the 130 sheriffs' posts nationwide.

The department ran adverts in national newspapers on December 16. The deadline for applications was January 18.

The ads were published during the peak holiday period and not many people had the opportunity to apply for these positions.

A week of advertising in two national publications during peak holiday seasons is inadequate.

I call on the minister and department to postpone the closing date for applications to allow more people to apply. The sheriff plays an important role in our communities and we must ensure that the best people are appointed.

I trust the department and ministry will do the right thing by extending the deadline.
