I read with interest Jonathan Jansen's "Best-kept success story". Having been closely involved in the rebuilding of the Lawhill Maritime Centre during 2010, I would like to add some pertinent facts which have resulted in this success story.

Lawhill Maritime Centre not only teaches maritime studies as part of Simon's Town School's curriculum, it is also a hostel that accommodates 54 full-time boarders, who are all on full scholarships funded by private shipping companies as well as Portnet and the South African Maritime Safety Authority.

It is the dedication of the teaching and support staff at the centre, led by Brian Ingpen, that is the real cause of success. The centre is based on respect - respect for the teachers and staff, respect for pupils and respect for the premises. This is why Jansen saw so neat and orderly a centre.
