The letter "Police probably linked to gangs" (August 20) refers. Notorious Pig Spotter makes sweeping and very disparaging accusations about the SAPS and dishes out irresponsible advice.

If anything, the writer's stance is an insult to thousands of police officers who risk their lives daily to make this country safe. A sizeable number of police officers have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. The primary function of the police is to protect the people and their properties.

This is a huge responsibility and, as such, the police need all the help they can get from the community. The writer's criticism does not help and he does not provide any evidence to back his allegations.

If any person is aware of a police officer's involvement in gang-related or corrupt activities, they are strongly encouraged to report such activities to the nearest police station, the SAPS's Crime Stop at 08600-10111 or SMS the Crime Line at 32211.

Before the end of the financial year the SAPS will have established its own anti-corruption unit, whose core function will be to deal decisively with officers who are engaged in criminal activities.
