Let's go back: The lament of FW de Klerk: Poem

A poem about FW de Klerk's recent TV interview.

Freedom wasn't supposed to be
Reconciliation was never the solution
Erosion of apartheid was wrong and still is
Democracy just one big mistake, disenfranchisement yes!
Every race was supposed to be one and not mixed
Regions of small populations each with its own language
In harmony kids playing in isolation with no friends
Knowledge of neighbours language and culture completely immaterial

Wish I didn't do it, wish I didn't bow to pressure and go blind
I wish I could turn back time and bring it all back
Let people live in and never leave their homelands
Let them stay away from each other like aliens and never mix
Enclose every race in its small space in the universe never to go out.
My people only, free to move around in search of labourers.

Damn I messed up! I really went the wrong way
Even Verwoerd is not proud of me, forgive me Malan

Kill this system of democracy and let’s go back
Let’s go back so I can fix things and rejuvenate the beast
Establish that separate but equal state that drove me as a young man
Repugnant they say it was, I say that was brilliant and still want it
Knock me off this mess and make me go back.
