Defections by soldiers once loyal to Syria's Bashar al-Assad are a tangible sign that the Syrian revolt is gearing up to become a full-scale conflict ("Putin, Annan meet over deepening Syrian crisis", yesterday).

A senior army officer has fled to France and others have joined the resistance movement. With Kofi Annan's diplomatic shuttles a virtual failure and the Russians' support for the Assad regime unfailing, the world watches as hundreds of people are butchered by the repressive Assad regime.
