Pope Benedict XVI speaks to the faithful for the last time from the balcony of his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo. Pope Benedict left the Vatican on Thursday after pledging unconditional obedience to whoever succeeds him to guide the Roman Catholic Church at one of the most crisis-ridden periods in its 2,000-year history.

The next pope should come from Latin America, Brazil in particular, the fastest-growing Catholic community.

It is also time for serious debates to take place about the option for priests to marry. Our very first pope, St Peter, was married.

The church should start looking at the ordination of women priests. Jesus had female disciples . Alas, I think this won't be considered for at least another 100 years.
