I must congratulate your journalists Graeme Hosken, Schalk Mouton and TJ Strydom for their excellent investigative report "Scramble for CAR minerals" (March 28) . It is "worm can-openers" like them who contribute hugely towards bringing out the truths that powerful forces often resent.

The Times's story has played a significant role in promoting the efforts of those who want to know the truth behind the presence of South African troops in the Central African Republic. Are they there to promote the interests of dodgy politicians and fatcat businessmen with more money than morals, or are they there for reasons that are honourable and in the interests of South Africa?

I have full confidence that our vigorous media will expose the rot. I have less confidence that suitable punishments will be imposed on those guilty of wrongdoing.
