The man who killed Nhlanhla Gasa was sentenced less than two weeks after the discovery of the businessman's body ("Gasa's killer gets 30 years", yesterday). But imagine if the killer was white.

The guy would have had a top psychologist, or psychiatrist, declare him insane and claim he suffered abuse when he was young and therefore could not be held accountable for his actions.

The magistrate would have postponed the case for months to allow the psychologist to "evaluate" the accused to find anything that would create reasonable doubt about the killer's accountability.

Back in court, the accused would be so sick he would not be able to follow proceedings and the magistrate would be forced to adjourn the court to allow him to get "help".

The magistrate would then rule the accused be released.

Poor Gasa's killer - he couldn't afford top lawyers and a psychologist, hence he got "swift justice".
