One million people have received eye care examinations in KwaZulu-Natal, says the provincial department of health.

“The MEC for Health Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo will today join partners in celebrating the one millionth patient who received eye examination and care,” said department spokesman Chris Maxon.

He said it was a joint programme between the department, International Centre for Eyecare Education (ICEE), Standard Chartered Bank and Optometry Giving Sight.

Maxon said nearly 1,000 nurses had also been trained to provide primary eye care services in a number of public health facilities.

"During the programme children of all ages received basic eye care examination at their local clinics where there were no services previously due to insufficiently trained personnel and equipment," said Maxon.

A gala dinner would be held on Thursday evening at Didima Camp in Drakensburg to celebrate the achievements of the programme, he said.
