President Jacob Zuma spoke fondly of the former SA High Commissioner to Uganda, Bavumile Vilakazi, whose tombstone was unveiled in Vanderbijlpark on Saturday, said presidential spokeswoman Zanele Mngadi.

"President Zuma spoke of him as a soldier and a son of the struggle," said Mngadi.

Vilakazi died in 2005 in Kampala. He had just fetched then deputy president Zuma, from the Kampala airport when he suffered a heart attack.

"President Zuma remembered how close he had grown to  Mr Bavumile as he travelled to Uganda often when he was deputy president, for consultations with President Yoweri Museveni, who chaired The Great Lakes Regional Initiative on Burundi."

The unveiling was also attended by Minister of Arts and Culture, Paul Mashatile, mayor of Sedibeng district municipality councillor Simon Mofokeng, and executive mayor of the Ekurhuleni Metro, councillor Mondli Gungubele.
