A major power outage in the Johannesburg area has left 26 suburbs without electricity since midday.

The City Power call centre lists the suburbs affected as Gresswold, Highlands North, Kensington, Hyde Park, Oaklands, Rosebank and Witpoortjie, amongst others.

Reports suggest that the cause of the outage is a problem with transmission lines and that power should be restored by 4pm.

An engineer from Eskom said their system is green, meaning there are no problems on their side.

City Power has been unavailable for comment.
