Baboon missing again in Johannesburg

A roaming baboon located south of Johannesburg last week has gone missing again.

"Whether he is still wandering around the area or left no one knows," Lyall Meistre, owner of off-site monitoring company Vega Monitoring, said on Wednesday.

"No one has seen him for the last couple of days."

The baboon was last spotted in the Meyersdal Eco Estate on Thursday. The estate contacted animal authorities to capture him, but then could not find him.

Meistre said the animal was not injured as initially thought.

"He looks like he is in good health, but moves around the estate quite a bit," he said at the time. The primate had been on the loose for about a week-and-a-half after first being sighted by Vega staff at a complex in Bassonia, roughly two kilometres away.

Its movements were recorded on closed-circuit television cameras.

A security meeting was held on Tuesday night about the roaming baboon, said Meistre. Residents were urged not to feed it because it was wild. It was believed to be a male.
