The alleged torture and murder of a Pretoria man at the hands of police was being investigated, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said on Friday.

Lebogang Legodi, 28, was allegedly tortured around 8pm on Wednesday at the Chamdor police station on the West Rand, said spokesman Moses Dlamini.

"It is alleged that the deceased was picked up at his parents' home in Garankuwa by members of the SAPS on 12 September 2012 [Wednesday] in the afternoon," he said.

Following the alleged torture, Legodi was taken to Leratong Hospital in an unmarked vehicle, but was not admitted, as he had already died.

Dlamini said, "Apparently the police tried to have the post mortem done before the family became aware of the death."

The post mortem was to be held on Tuesday.

No arrests had been made.
