Ten Rainbow Chicken employees were seriously injured when their bus was petrol bombed in Zinniaville industrial area, Rustenburg, North West police said on Wednesday.

A group of people, believed to be striking Rainbow staff, allegedly threw a petrol bomb at the bus, which was carrying 63 Rainbow workers to Kroondal on Tuesday evening, Captain Philani Mvuna said.

"At this stage, police believe the attack might be linked to the ongoing industrial action at Rainbow Chicken."

A case of attempted murder and malicious damage to property was opened. No one had been arrested by Wednesday afternoon.

Last month, 1857 Rainbow workers affiliated to the Food and Allied Workers' Union embarked on a strike at the Rustenburg plant.

They wanted a monthly wage increase of R700 and changes to their working conditions, the union said.
