A teacher accused of raping an 11-year-old pupil appeared in the Dutywa Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, Eastern Cape police said.

The case was postponed to Friday. The teacher, who was arrested on Monday, would remain in custody, said Captain Jackson Manatha.

He said the teacher apparently called the pupil on Friday evening to ask her to return money he had given her.

When she arrived, he asked her to be his girlfriend. When she ignored him, he dragged her to a nearby veld and allegedly raped her.

The girl told her parents and a case was opened.
