The man accused of raping and killing 17-year-old Anene Booysen was not read his full rights during an interview earlier this year, according to a report.
Lt-Col Hermien Titlestad-van Zyl, from the Mitchells Plain police, told the Swellendam Circuit Court on Friday that after arriving at Bredasdorp police station, she had "not read out [Johannes] Kana's rights verbatim", reported the Saturday Star.
Titlestad-van Zyl told the court she was contacted by Bredasdorp police with a request to assist. She arrived at the station on February 22 to speak to Kana about the pointing out of the crime scene.
Although she said she explained why she was there, and that he could have an attorney present, she "didn't use the words that if he pointed anything out it could be used against him in court".
Kana is on trial for allegedly raping and disembowelling Booysen in Bredasdorp, Western Cape, in February. Booysen died in Tygerberg Hospital on the afternoon of Saturday, February 2.
Kana has admitted leaving a Bredasdorp pub with Booysen, hitting and raping her, but has denied killing her.
The trial continues on Monday.
