Kulula.com's plan to host the first ever braai in the sky was not an April Fools' Day prank, according to the budget carrier.

"Truth be told, kulula really did in fact take to the skies to elevate a great South African tradition with the first ever braai in the sky," the company said in a statement.

According to the statement, the company sent two of its braai masters up in a balloon to braai  "boerewors and chops to perfection in mid-air".

“Although it had a few challenges, kulula is delighted to have hosted the very first ever braai in the sky and we feel we have done this South African tradition proud,"  said Shaun Pozyn, Marketing Manager of kulula.com in a statement.

The company will not, however be offering braais on their flights right now.

"We’ve decided to leave the braaing where it rightfully belongs: on South African soil, and rather let our in-house catering division, Food Directions, continue to take food preparation to new heights,” Pozyn said.
