The University of Pretoria was considering separating first-year students from seniors by placing them in their own residences, according to a report.

Beeld newspaper reported on Friday that university spokeswoman Nicolize Mulder told the Afrikaans daily that the tertiary institution wanted to create an environment where first-year students could adjust easily and perform academically, while also enjoying a balanced and safe social life.

Afriforum Youth has rejected the idea, saying residences were not consulted and merely informed that the separation would be implemented from next year.

But Mulder said the university was still considering the idea and that it would possibly be implemented in 2016.
