Wits University has reached an agreement with the Student Representative Council, temporarily waiving the upfront fee payment of R4,670 that National Student Financial Aid Scheme students were asked to pay the university pending the outcome of their financial aid applications.

The university says the temporary waiver only applies to first year students who meet the financial aid criteria and who have received an academic offer from the university.

The waiver will apply until the final student financial aid scheme allocations have been made, which is expected to be next week Friday.

For those whose financial aid applications are successful, the waiver will be made permanent. Those who find their applications unsuccessful will have five working days to come up with the R4,670 upfront payment fee.

SRC president Mcebo Freedom Dlamini welcomed the temporary waiver and said he was closely monitoring the registration process to ensure that the university adheres to the agreement.
