Gautrain commuters who park their vehicles illegally outside the Midrand Station have been given until March 9 to find alternative space or face their vehicles being towed to the municipal pound.

The City of Johannesburg regional director Abigail Ndlovu said over the past year there had been a steady increase in the number of vehicles parking illegally outside the station. The commuters normally park their vehicles outside the station leave them for the rest of the day, only to remove then when they come back from work. This is despite pay parking bays available for the Gautrain commuters inside the station.

“The area in front of the Gautrain station is a provincial road reserve and parking in this area is prohibited. Taxi operators, some legal and some not, have also taken to parking in restricted areas around the station,” Ndlovu said.

Since February 24, City of Joburg and Gautrain have been distributing flyers on the windscreens of illegally parked vehicles, making public announcements on the train itself to  bring awareness of about the infringement.

As of March 9, any vehicle parked illegally outside the Midrand station will either be clamped or towed to the municipal pound. A fee of R2370 will be paid by the motorists for the release of the vehicle.
