The start of Christopher Panayiotou’s bail hearing on Thursday opened with a discussion about why the advocate for the defence was not in court the day before. Magistrate Abigail Beaton had postponed the matter because of confusion surrounding who was representing him.Panayiotou‚ 28‚ stands accused in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court of orchestrating the abduction and murder of his 29-year-old wife‚ Jayde.Beaton was angered by the defence’s hesitance to go ahead with the matter and twice adjourned proceeding to allow Panayiotou’s legal team time to address the issue‚ before closing proceedings for the day.Advocate Terry Price‚ for Panayiotou‚ on Thursday told Beaton that he had informed prosecutor Marius Stander that he was not available for Wednesday’s proceedings. This was confirmed by Stander on Thursday.Price also told Beaton that he took exception being called “unethical” for not appearing. She had said that what was happening was “unethical” as no one had “yet apologised for Mr Price not being here”‚ Herald Live reported on Wednesday.Beaton on Thursday asked Price about a complaint he told media that he would be laying against her‚ saying she takes complaints made against her “as a presiding officer...seriously".Price denied laying a complain‚ but said he had actually told media that he had only spoken to the chief magistrate about the issue. The matter was then stood down for the state to make its case against bail being granted. Some court observers said that the investigating officer in the case was seen talking to Christopher Panayiotou’s alleged mistress Chanelle Coutts during the break. On Tuesday‚ it emerged that Coutts had not‚ despite reports to the contrary‚ turned state witness. Some media outlets speculated that Coutts would be called on Wednesday as a witness‚ but others said prosecutor Stander would merely read out a statement outlining the case against Christopher Panayiotou.Lawyer David Dadic‚ who commented widely on the Oscar Pistorius case‚ tweeted on Wednesday: ‏“So today we hear the state’s case against #Panayiotou & particularly the elusive motive. Seems the affair is the crux (which seems weak to me)”.Port Elizabeth attorney Danie Gouws‚ who represents Coutts‚ told The Herald that Coutts has not turned state witness but has sought legal representation in the lead-up to the state presenting its evidence in Panayiotou’s bail application.Earlier this week‚ it emerged Coutts‚ 26‚ a manager Panayiotou’s OK Grocer in Algoa Park‚ has been booked off work for stress.Jayde Panayiotou was abducted on April 21 outside the Kabega townhouse at complex where they lived while waiting for a friend to collect her for work. Her body was found the next day on a farm in Rocklands. She had been shot three times.Luthando Siyoli‚ 31‚ and Sizwezakhe Vumazonke‚ 30‚ are Panayiotou’s co-accused. – RDM News Wire/The Herald..
