KwaMashu Hostel leader and IFP member gunned down

A special multi-party meeting will be convened between KwaZulu-Natal political groups after the murder at point-blank range of an Inkatha Freedom Party leader last night. KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport‚ Community Safety and Liaison‚ Willies Mchunu‚ said he had learnt with shock that the IFP Ward 39 chairperson at KwaMashu Hostel‚ Mbhasobheni Biyela‚ was killed while returning from a meeting at Shayamoya last night.“Preliminary information indicates that Mr Biyela was accosted by two men who fired at him four times from close range.”He died on the scene and the police have opened a docket of murder. Four cartridges of 9mm pistol were found on the scene.Mchunu urged the law enforcement agencies to do everything possible to ensure that those responsible were arrested.“We are disturbed at this unfortunate development which comes at the time when the Government was doing everything possible to ensure that peace returned to this hostel. Indeed‚ the hostel had enjoyed a relative peace.“We urge all hostel inmates to observe restraint and allow law agencies to probe this matter. We have‚ however‚ been assured that the police are working around the clock to ensure that those responsible for this murder are brought to book soon”‚ said Mchunu.He referred to “recent isolated incidents of murders at the hostel” but did not elaborate. He‚ however‚ expressed hope that this did not suggest the resurgence of political violence at the hostel.“As a Department‚ we will continue to work with political parties to promote peaceful political co-existence. To this end‚ we have also developed a programme of action to ensure that peace prevailed at the hostel ahead of the forthcoming 2016 Local Government elections. So far‚ all parties have committed themselves to working with the Government to ensure peaceful political co-existence at the hostel‚” said Mchunu.He will today visit the scene of the murder in KwaMashu‚ and will convene a special meeting between the ANC‚ IFP and NFP...
