Prosecutor calls DJ Donald a liar

18 August 2015 - 10:11 By Roxanne Henderson

The prosecution in Donald Sebolai's murder trial has branded the DJ a liar‚ who wanted his girlfriend to die‚ by pointing out a host of inconsistencies in his testimony. Sebolai was under cross-examination on Monday at the Johannesburg High Court‚ sitting at the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court southeast of Johannesburg.Sebolai‚ 38‚ allegedly stabbed his girlfriend Rachel Flavia “Dolly” Tshabalala to death after the couple had a fight at his Soweto flat on June 29‚ last year.Sebolai has pleaded not guilty. He claims that Tshabalala attacked him with a steak knife‚ and that he acted in self-defence.Prosecutor Elize le Roux questioned a number of discrepancies in Sebolai's testimony on Tshabalala's fatal stabbing.Le Roux asked Sebolai why he had testified earlier that Tshabalala had tried to stab him three times‚ but had later said she had tried to stab him twice. She also asked why he told the court that Tshabalala was dead when he left his flat on the morning of her death‚ but had testified during his bail application that he was not sure whether she was dead or alive.Sebolai's explanation for the many discrepancies was shock‚ confusion and at times alcohol.“I'm trying very hard to remember how many times she tried to stab me. We were drunk‚” he said. But Le Roux hit back and called Sebolai a liar‚ who acted carelessly when Tshabalala's life was threatened and fled after she had died.“I put it to you that when you left the flat [on the morning of Tshabalala's death] you could not care whether she was alive or not. You wanted her to die.“That's why you locked the flat and drove off without going to the police or the hospital‚” she said.Sebolai told the court that he did not get Tshabalala to a hospital after she was stabbed right away because he did not think her injury was serious.“You see‚ as far as I am concerned an emergency is an injury in the upper body‚” he said. The court heard earlier that Tshabalala died of excessive blood loss. She had been stabbed once in her lower abdomen. The wound extended to the root of her right thigh and severed an artery.Sebolai did not call the police‚ call for an ambulance or take Tshabalala to a hospital that is 900m away from his flat on the morning of her death.Le Roux also accused Sebolai of planning to flee to Botswana‚ where he has family‚ to escape arrest. But Sebolai denied this. The DJ also faces charges of theft and defeating the ends of justice for allegedly stealing Tshabalala's car and removing evidence from the crime scene. He has also pleaded not guilty to these charges. - RDM News Wire, TMG Courts and Law..
