Two more police officers killed‚ one wounded

Two more police officers have been shot dead‚ bringing to almost 60 the number of police officers killed so far this year. The latest killings both occurred in Gauteng within six hours of each other.Police tweeted that one police officer was shot dead and another wounded in the Johannesburg suburb of Hillbrow in the early hours of Saturday morning while an off-duty policeman from Laudium died in hospital on Friday night after being shot earlier in Atteridgeville west of Pretoria.In the Hillbrow incident‚ the two officers were shot dead when they confronted two men who had allegedly tried to rob a woman.The off-duty policeman from Laudium was shot by four people‚ one of whom was reported to be female‚ in a suspected car hijacking. Reacting to the news‚ the Democratic Alliance said the numbers of police officers killed this year was alarming and needed to be taken seriously by the Minister if Police and management of the South African Police Service (SAPS).Extending his condolences to families‚ friends and colleagues of the latest victims‚ DA deputy spokesman on police matters Zakhele Mbhele said: “Our police men and women put their lives at risk every day‚ in order to protect South Africans and keep our streets safe. Their bravery does not go unnoticed.“On behalf of the DA‚ I will be tabling a motion without notice in the National Assembly next week so that Parliament can join the DA in extending its condolences to the families and friends of those who have fallen in the line of duty.”..
