The South African Weather Service on Friday issued a warning for high temperatures which may result in fires this weekend.

The advisory follows a heat wave which swept across the country this week.

The South African Weather Service said a heatwave with persistently high temperatures was expected over Gauteng, parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga until at least Sunday.

On Saturday, Pretoria was expected to reach sweltering highs of 37°C and Johannesburg and Vereeniging at 33°C. The expected UVB sunburn index was warned as extreme.

The service said parts of the country may not be affected include the west, south-east, extreme eastern and extreme north-eastern areas.
