Rocks were strewn on roads in Kya Sands in Randburg and rubber bullets were fired as hundreds of people protested early on Monday morning.

The intersection at Malibongwe and Riverbend Roads was blocked as protesters left debris on the street, said Johannesburg Metro Police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar.

There were also tweets alleging that stones had been thrown at motorists.

Minnaar said there were between 150 and 200 protesters.

It was unclear what the protest was about, he said.
