Emergency services have warned about a current heatwave in KwaZulu-Natal, with parts of the province reaching well over 40 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie said the town of Stanger, north of Durban, had reached a whopping 44 degrees around midday.

"We want to caution people to please stay well hydrated. Do not only drink water when you are thirsty, rather maintain hydration throughout the day," he said.

He said strenuous activity, including cardiovascular exercise, should be avoided, as well as sugary drinks.

"These drinks may be cool, but they will not help in this heat.

"People should also avoid leaving pets or children in their vehicles for even a short space of time. For today, drink at least two litres of water and stick to light clothing.”
