Tipoff leads to R1.2 million abalone bust

A tipoff led to the arrest of a 53-year-old Hermanus for the illegal possession and transporting of abalone on Monday morning. The haul is reported to be worth R1.2-million.Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut said members from Cape Town’s K9 Unit “responded to information of a vehicle allegedly transporting abalone from Kleinmond to Bellville and conducted patrols on the N2 freeway between Sir Lowry`s Pass and Somerset West”.They spotted the vehicle‚ a white Volkswagen Caddie‚ on the N2 opposite Lwandle at about 6.30am and pulled it over.“Upon searching the vehicle they recovered numerous cardboard boxes containing dried abalone. The driver of the vehicle‚ a 53-year-old man from Hawston‚ Hermanus was arrested and the vehicle seized‚” Traut said.“Officials from the Department of Agriculture‚ Forestry and Fisheries were summoned to Lwandle police station where the abalone was counted.“It amounted to 7270 units of dried abalone with an estimated value of R1.2-million.”The man is expected to appear in the Strand Magistrates Court on Wednesday...
