Launch of South Africa Day

Archbishop Thabo Makgoba joined captains of industry and economist Chris Hart to launch South Africa Day on Friday. The business community initiated the idea to “take the country forward”‚ to create social cohesion‚ celebrate the country‚ its people and achievements‚ and to take pride as a people and a country.The launch was announced in a statement released by the new organisation on Tuesday.Chris Hart‚ global market strategist at Standard Bank‚ said he was looking forward to corporate South Africa to drive and support South Africa Day‚ and for each company to contribute its share to the South Africa Day initiative.“We cannot afford to have exclusivity in terms of who can or cannot support South Africa Day‚ this is supposed to be a joint or collaborative initiative‚” said Hart.The group's statement said: “Archbishop Thabo Makgoba urged the business community to support the South Africa Day Bursary Fund that would raise funds to support deserving students and learners. He said that he is where he is today because of opportunities that were created for him by others.”Founding members include Makgoba‚ Hart‚ Vice-Chancellor of Wits University Adam Habib‚ Aveng board member Juba Mashaba‚ member of the Health Professions Council of SA Dr Bheki Shongwe‚ Pepe Marais of Joe Public United‚ MTN Human Resources chief Paul Norman‚ and Chancellor of Pretoria University Prof Wiseman Nkhulu.The event will take place on the second Saturday of every November.
