Police have arrested the mother of a 2-month-old baby who was found abandoned next to a railway line in Cullinan, east of Pretoria.

The 23-year-old woman was arrested on Monday morning for child neglect.

Police spokesperson Constable Connie Moganedi said the woman came to the police station and reported that her child was stolen.

“She claimed her baby was stolen but she eventually confessed that she left her baby next to the railway line – apparently she wanted to attend a party,” said Moganedi.

On Saturday, Moganedi said two men aged between 17 and 22 approached Cullinan police, carrying the infant.

“The males reported that they found an infant, wrapped with a baby blanket, lying on his stomach, next to the railway line crying bitterly."

The mother is expected to appear in court sometime this week, she said.
