Police fired rubber bullets and stun grenades at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) after a group of people wearing Sasco T-shirts clashed with protesting workers on Wednesday afternoon.

The group in the SA Students Congress (Sasco) T-shirts had emerged from the campus with bricks and bottles, which they began throw at the workers who were sitting down. One worker was injured and was bleeding heavily.

Police opened fire with rubber bullets and stun grenades to disperse the groups.

The workers accused police of not protecting them.

The windscreen of a News24 reporter's car was damaged during the commotion Contract workers at various universities have been protesting since the start of the year, demanding permanent employment with benefits.

The University of Pretoria, the University of SA, Wits, and the University of Johannesburg had agreed to their demands. TUT had not made a decision on the matter yet.

Earlier, the gates to the institution were locked while the workers camped outside in the blistering sun. They appealed to police and security to let them in so they could talk to management.

"Management must let the principal come and speak to us, the workers of TUT. We are not slaves. Why should we struggle to get into a place where we work in? We are fighting for our rights," said cleaner Mavies Teletsane.

She said earlier over a loudspeaker: "I have been working for TUT for 16 years and I still earn R2 000. We want a basic salary of R10 000. We are fighting for the rights that are enshrined in our Constitution."
