The Pietermaritzburg Regional Court has sentenced a 45-year-old man to life imprisonment for raping his 13-year-old stepdaughter.

The victim was asleep in her room when she was awakened by the accused who took her to another room and raped her in 2014‚ Kwazulu-Natal police said.

“The mother of the victim woke up and noticed that her husband was not in bed. She immediately went to check on him in the other rooms but only discovered that the victim was also not in her bedroom.

“She further checked the other room upstairs and found her husband with the victim both naked‚” said police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane.

The mother had then taken the girl to a doctor to be examined and it was confirmed that she had been raped‚ he said.

“A case of rape was subsequently opened at Plessislaer SAPS and was transferred to Plessislaer Family Violence‚ Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit. The victim was interviewed and made a strong presentation at court‚ which also resulted in a successful conviction after a couple of remands‚” Maj Zwane said.

“We will ensure that any form of violence directed to women and children is dealt with intensely as it is unwarranted at the first place. It is shocking that the very person entrusted with the well-being of the victim abused his position of trust by violating the innocent child‚” said KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
