The chairpersons of Parliament’s portfolio committees on mineral resources and labour will visit the Lily Mine in Barberton‚ Mpumalanga‚ where three miners have been trapped underground for 11 days. The purpose of the visit by Sahlulele Luzipo and Lumka Yengeni “is to ascertain the circumstances around the mine collapse on February 5‚ 2016”‚ a Parliamentary Communication Services statement said.On Monday‚ while chances of finding the trapped mineworkers alive was “diminishing by the day”‚ Mike McChesney‚ CEO of Vantage Goldfields which owns the mine‚ said: “We haven’t given up hope of finding them.”Operations to rescue Pretty Mabuza‚ Solomon Nyarenda and Yvonne Mnisi had been suspended since Saturday morning after the mine experienced a second major collapse of ground on the southern wall of the open pit area‚ widening an exposed sinkhole and sending more rocks and debris into the underground mining area.McChesney said the search and rescue mission would remain suspended until such time as a full geotechnical assessment of the stability of the open pit area and underground operations had been completed. He described the rescue mission as a complex and risky operation.“Until we understand the geo-technical movement around our shaft we can't put people there‚” he said. The three mineworkers have been trapped in the mine since the morning of February 5‚ when the lamp room - a converted shipping container - where they were on duty‚ collapsed into an 80m hole.Eighty-seven workers were rescued from the debris. – TMG Digital..
