US Hip-hop artist Mos Def lit a cigar and asked for his privacy as he left the Bellville Magistrates Court this morning.

The controversial star, who goes by the name of Yasiin Bey, made another appearance in the dock for contravening immigration laws.

Wearing a scarf and dark glasses Bey arrived with his wife, daughter and legal team.

The matter was postponed to May 12 because his lawyers requested more information from the state.

His attorney, Shahied Schreuder, said the case was ''complicated but simple at the same time'' as the prosecution needs to consult with the necessary bodies including the US authorities.

He is on R5,000 bail.

Bey was arrested in January in Cape Town when he tried leaving the country using a "World Government of World Citizens'' passport which is not recognised by local authorities.

The celebrity and his family have been living in South Africa for a few years. It has been reported that he entered the country with a US passport and his visitors visa was valid until February.

His family's visas allegedly expired in 2014 and he is accused of illegally helping them stay in South Africa.
