Union talks tough with Telkom

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) marched to the Telkom headquarters on Tuesday to deliver a memorandum of demands‚ vowing to down tools all over the country if their demands are not met. "We went to Telkom to announce that if nothing happens on the 11th of August‚ we are going to march to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange where Telkom has been registered as a shareholder‚" said CWU general secretary Aubrey Tshabalala.Telkom turnaround continues after slashing nearly 4‚000 jobsTelkom parted ways with close to 4‚000 workers at a cost of R2.2-billion as the company implemented a controversial restructuring process aimed at cutting costs. Should Telkom fail to meet its demands‚ "we will cripple operations by fully withdrawing our labour not only in Telkom but in all its subsidiaries like we have started at Trudon‚" he said.Key demands are a 11% salary increase and six months fully paid maternity leave as well as a moratorium on retrenchments and outsourcing for checkpoint divisions...
