Liquor thief finds two-year jail term hard to swallow

01 September 2016 - 11:39 By Jerome Cornelius

It was hard for him to digest‚ but a man who helped himself to two bottles of digestif was sent to jail for two years. Kamohelo Makwa felt so queasy that he appealed against the sentence‚ but the Bloemfontein High Court has ruled that he must serve it. Makwa‚ 29‚ was caught stealing two bottles of Jägermeister worth R400 from Checkers in Welkom in December 2014. The theft happened four months after the 29-year-old was released on parole‚ and Judge Corné van Zyl said the magistrate’s court sentence was understandable in light of his previous convictions. These included 12 months' imprisonment for fraud in 2009‚ and a five-year sentence for housebreaking in 2010. – TMG Digital/The Times..
