A conspiracy to commit murder was foiled by police on the outskirts of Cape Town today when a woman handed over an undisclosed amount of cash to would-be hitmen to have her husband assassinated.

"Fortunately‚ swift action by seasoned detectives prevented the assassination of the would-be victim‚" Captain Piet Smit said.

The man's 44-year-old wife was arrested.

Smit said the Provincial Detective Unit and the Manenberg Serious and Violent Crimes Investigation Unit had handled the operation.

The investigation culminated at approximately 10.10am on Tuesday when a sting operation was conducted in the parking area of the Lansdowne Railway Station.

The Kenilworth woman was arrested when she handed over the cash. She is to appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court soon.
