The Tshwane Metro Police Department was on Thursday tight-lipped about any “operational decision” it might have to take should the #FeesMustFall march to the Union Buildings go ahead.
“They applied for a formal march and we did not grant them permission to march‚” said metro police spokesperson Isaac Mahamba.
Should the march go ahead‚ Mahamba said: “We might have to declare the march illegal…and we might open a case at a local police station‚ and should anything go wrong‚ the organisers of this particular march might be held responsible…”
He said permission was denied because no information was given about who would be accepting the protester’s memorandum‚ that Church Square could not accommodate the busses that are coming from “all the provinces”.
When an alternative gathering point was suggested‚ Mahamba said‚ the protesters walked out of the meeting.
Asked if they would be allowed to march‚ Mahamba said they would be monitored and an “operation decision” could be taken at a later stage.
“We cannot disclose at this stage what operational decision will be taken‚” he said.
