Wits relaxes curfew as it enters last week of the academic programme

The University of the Witwatersrand has relaxed its curfew after there were “no major incidents reported over the weekend”. From Monday‚ “students need to remain within their residences or areas of study from 1am – 5am”‚ the university said‚ adding those who needed to move during these times would be ushered by Campus Control.The 10pm curfew Wits had put in place the weekend before was largely defied by students holding vigils.Wits‚ however‚ said on Monday: “Given that there were no major incidents over the weekend and the assurances that we have received from student leaders and residence staff‚ we are progressively relaxing the restrictions on the movement of students as the situation improves at night.”The university noted that “that students and workers have planned several marches today‚ including a march involving students with disabilities”.“We enter the last week of the academic programme this week and all classes resume as per the academic calendar‚” it added. ..
