NSRI evacuates two crew members from same ship in three days

The National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) Port Elizabeth station on Monday night rescued an injured chef from a fish factory ship – two days after it had to bring ashore a sick crew member from the same craft. On Saturday‚ the PE duty crew received a “request for medical assistance from the 120m Desert Diamond reporting a female crew member suffering lower abdominal pains suspected to be appendicitis”.The ship headed towards Nelson Mandela Bay from fishing grounds three nautical miles east of the Port of Port Elizabeth Breakwater.The 41-year-old female crew member “was found in a stable condition‚ was transferred aboard the sea rescue craft and brought to shore where she was transported to hospital for further treatment”.“Desert Diamond returned to sea to continue fishing at fishing grounds‚” the NSRI.She was discharged on Monday‚ but later that day‚ another request for medical assistance was made‚ this time when the Desert Diamond’s “55-year-old head chef‚ from Cape Town‚ suffered a neck and back injury reportedly sustained in a fall”.The NSRI returned to the ship accompanied by an Eastern Cape Government Health EMS rescue paramedic‚ who helped treat the patient‚ secure him into a Stokes basket stretcher and transfer the chef to the sea rescue craft to be brought to port.He was then transported to hospital “in a stable condition”‚ the NSRI said. ..
