"Being in prison‚ my eyes have been opened to the gross reality that so many young black lives have been condemned to a life of poverty where the most travelled road leads to prison." This is the message from awaiting trial student Mcebo Dlamini.
The message was shared by the University of Witwatersrand student representative council on Wednesday morning.
The #FeesMustFall student leader is in good health at Johannesburg Central Prison‚ according to Gauteng Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane.
Nkosi-Malobane told provincial legislature members on Tuesday that she had visited him and could assure that public that he is eating and being well taken care of behind bars.
“He is not on hunger strike. He is in a high-care facility where people like gays and police are placed because of possible attacks they can receive from other inmates...” said Nkosi-Malobane.
Dlamini‚ a former SRC president at the University of the Witwatersrand and leader of the #FeesMustFall movement‚ was arrested this month at student residence by police on five charges‚ including public violence and assault.
