The University of the Witwatersrand is forging ahead with its academic programme‚ and said all tests‚ lectures and university activities went ahead without disruption on Wednesday. The institution‚ however‚ announced that a fire was started at the library on the Wits Education Campus‚ in Parktown‚ on Thursday morning. Some books in one aisle were burnt. The fire was extinguished and Wits security and the police were on the scene to investigate the matter. The institution apologised to all the affected students. Despite this‚ the university announced that the academic programme would continue according to the academic calendar on Thursday.The senior executive team said in recent weeks that the institution had noticed that individuals linked to some criminal activities on its campuses had entered using active student cards.“We would like to remind all students and staff that it is a serious violation of the university’s rules to allow anyone to use your access card.“You are not allowed to ‘swipe’ anyone through a turnstile. Students who allow others to use their access cards may be charged for misconduct.”Wits said appropriate action would be taken against anyone caught using an access card that did not belong to them.– TMG Digital..
