Hours after reports said that a Ford Figo had caught alight outside a Mpumalanga hospital on Wednesday‚ another Kuga caught fire in Pretoria.

That brings the number of Kugas said to have caught alight in South Africa to 50‚ of which 13 have caught fire so far this year.

The Mpumalanga fire happened at the Nelspruit Mediclinic as a woman was parking her car after dropping her husband off for an appointment with a doctor.

The Pretoria fire‚ according to newspaper seller‚ Aaron Mkahuru‚ happened when a woman stopped at a traffic light outside Kgosi Mampuru II Prison.

He said he was at the intersection when he saw smoke coming from the front of the car.

“A woman who was driving the car jumped out. She called the emergency services‚” Mkahuru said.

“They came but she was not hurt. The fire brigade came and put out the fire. Then Ford came with a breakdown to tow the car away.”

He said the woman was crying.

“She was so upset and looked very scared.”

The latest fires came two days after Ford week announced a mass recall of 4556 of its 2012-2014 1.6l EcoBoost Kugas. The 49th vehicle caught fire in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
